I just wanted to tell you what a great time we had on the Loch Ness and Glen Affric tour.  It was the highlight of our trip! I particularly enjoyed hearing the stories about Scotland's crazy history in between the secret spots you took us to that we never would have been able to visit on a typical coach tour. We will be back again in the spring to go on the Skye tour for sure. What a great time, thanks so much for showing us the real Scotland. Amazing!!

Dear Tony,

I am so remorseful that I haven't communicated with you prior to this. Suffice it to say, I was overwhelmed when I returned home and just got way too busy.

Gary and I loved our trip to Scotland. Hugh Allison was a phenomenal guide. Our expectations were exceeded by leaps and bounds.

Not only is he a published author and noted historian, he is just an all-around lovely person. We completely fell in love with Scotland. Thank you so much for all your help in planning our itinerary. We loved all the places we stayed, except Glasgow, which you didn't help us with.

We have no qualms about recommending your services to anyone who asks.

George Munro was wonderful!

He was very accommodating to our wishes and gave us lots of information (printed and verbal) but not so overwhelming that it became boring.

I had mentioned that I wanted to see a field of heather and he not only took us to one but sent me home (back to the ship) with a branch that I enjoyed until we left the ship.

He was a big part of why we felt that Inverness was one of our favorite ports!

Special Itinerary of Loch Ness, Clava, Cawdor & Culloden from an Invergordon Cruise Ship, 16th July 2009Passenger Image

His knowledge was only exceeded by his personality. The only reason for an "8" on the vehicle was due to a change in the original booked car. Instead of cancelling the tour we opted for a bit of cramped space.

Score 8/10 Picture by Marty on the right showing the inside of Castle Urquhart.

I sold my own tour vehicle and so began 2009 using contract vehicles from Arnold Clark as they carry "hire and reward" insurance and I could select the best vehicle for the number of passengers. However, Arnold Clark let me down several times, not only with the wrong vehicle as on this occasion (this one was booked six weeks in advance) but also with dirty vehicles. The final straw was the scrapping of all seven seater vehicles except Vauxhall Zafira's which have a most unpleasant seat arrangement. I have now purchased my own vehicle again (picture below) so that the problem will not recur. Conducting only one or two tours per week this means the vehicle is idle most of the time, but at least I know it will be clean and fit for purpose. I should also mention that, as a goodwill gesture, this group had a cruise on Loch Ness and entries paid into Urquhart Castle and Cawdor Castle which represented a refund of more than £120. Unlike Arnold Clark who still charged us full price for the vehicle despite their promise of satisfaction, we live up to our responsibilities when things go wrong even if it hurts!

Special Tour in group's own vehicle from Invergarry to Balmoral, 26th June 2009

This last summer, I arranged a trip around Scotland for a group of Rotarians.

One day I had arranged for Tony Harmsworth from Inverness Tours to jump on the bus to give us some local facts as we travelled from Invergarry to Balmoral where we toured the Royal Lochnagar Destillery.

As we had our own bus, I can't fault the guide for any possible short comings in that area.

We got the entire history of Scotland in one day! It added immensely to our drive to have someone with true knowledge of the area and its history on board. Stops included monasteries, castles, battle fields, the grave yard across from Aleister Crowley's house and more... I'd recommend this to anyone with any interest in the history of Scotland.

The only thing that anyone commented on was that we did not stop to take a picture along Loch Ness.

My husband and I spent a wonderful two weeks in Scotland last summer. Half of that time was spent in and around Inverness.

I had found Inverness Tours online months before our vacation. You offered exactly what we were looking for.

We had both read The Outlander Series so Hugh Allison's Outlander tour was a MUST SEE. He was wonderful!! He was extremely knowledgeable of the time period. He had picked places that could replicate places in the book perfectly. His knowledge of Culloden was remarkable.

I have now read his book and several more about Culloden and The Rising. I am a hands on type person and I love European history so Hugh was a perfect match for us. We also had Mr. Allison as a guide for a short half day tour to Cawdor Castle and Pluscarden Abbey.

Dear Tony,

Thank you again for the Macbeth Tour. It was magical. I would return (if I could afford it) tomorrow. Everything was perfect except for the amount of time we were there.

You probably know this already, but there is an author, Diana Gabaldon, who has written a series of novels (a loose historical fiction) about a woman who experiences Scottish history beginning 1743. They are wildly popular here. Many of my friends have read all of them. I tell you this because I can envision little old lady (and really not so old lady) book clubs reading the novels, then visiting Scotland to have you conduct them on the "Outlander" tour. It would be a great addition to your tour repertoire, I think. (If you don't have it already.) Women would love it. I know a couple of book clubs who I am going to encourage in this direction.

Thank you again for your gracious hospitality during our too brief visit to Scotland.

Of all the things we did while on our month in Britain this had to be the best money we spent anywhere. I teach history in California and found the way you covered your subject breathtaking and will be introducing some of your techniques in class.

The kids actually learned something today and, although viewing castles can be boring for children, you brought it all to life for them and kept their attention throughout the day.

Loch Ness tour is a tourist trap and Glen Affric on a 40 hours rainy period was only rescued due to the visit to the pottery - Tony, you did your very best on our exclusive tour that day - please, do us a favour to inform us the correct manner to make use of the lamp we bought at the pottery - Friday 1st June it was [fellow passengers] Kathie and Bob, who saved our day for us to remember - why all your talk of very, old history - as if we had not read our local books on "The road goes to Scotland" - are you really capable of driving so many hours, talking so much. Ole, Denmark.

Wow! 2/10. It doesn't get much worse than that, does it? All the " - "s above are theirs by the way, not bits I have taken out.

I think they should not have chosen a specialist history tour which, surprisingly, involves talking about our history. The Loch Ness comment is rather puzzling too. We did not go to any of the usual attractions. Also, despite having the use of our golfing umbrellas these passengers did not leave the car at all in Glen Affric!

Regarding the length of driving time, they actually took every option to extend the length of the tour including an optional one-hour loop on Skye. The Skye tour is about 200 miles of the most stunning scenery spread over about five hours in the best of comfort. Compare this to the minibus day tours from Edinburgh which do 400 miles - ten hours in the vehicle!

It is obviously not possible to please all the people all of the time, but at least it demonstrates we will publish bad as well as good. I would hope that anyone choosing our A03ii tour is aware that it is a minimum of an eleven hour day, but other comments about it on this page speak for themselves. Tony

I took these passengers for a short walk up a hill near the Glenfinnan monument to look at an inscription on the rock which proclaims, in Latin, that it was here where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard triumphantly in 1745. Thanks to Connie for the translation. There is some argument over whether this was the actual spot, but it is certainly more likely than on the site of the monument itself.
